Keeping time while submerged is a tough job and, with diving becoming an increasingly popular activity, one that requires very robust professional watches. There is a kind of beauty to the professional diver's watch that comes from the pure pleasure of engineering excellence. There is nothing superfluous about divers' watches, except of course the fact that they are engineered beyond the point of mere utility. After all, no human being is ever going to dive to depths beyond 1000 meters. There is, however, a marvelous draw to the idea that you can go that deep, if you wanted, with the proper equipment.

To date, no watch can be completely water proof. Just as cars will always have an upper speed limit, no matter how much torque their engines push out, so too will water resistance and accuracy have their own inherent limitations. Beyond a certain point, speed is almost certainly useless or near-impossible to achieve without a track. That does not make the McLaren SLR or the Bugatti Veyron any less attractive though, and it certainly does not dent the appeal of the professional diver's watch.
To better appreciate this kind of watch, the first thing to do is understand the requirements that define the professional diver's watch. In this regard, it is possible to define clear parameters and, without resorting to hyperbole, make the case for the true professional diver's watch.
